About the source code License

GPL is a free, copyleft license for software and other kinds of works. The licenses for most software and other practical works are designed to take away your freedom to share and change the works. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change all versions of a program — to make sure it remains free software for all its users.

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. The General Public License was designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things.

The Lumiera project provides a lot of additional materials, design documents, technical documentation, background information ( User Manual is planned ) at Lumiera.org.

Obligations

In essence we want to protect the fundamental freedoms to use and run, study, share, or modify the software and the provided additional content. To comply with the formal requirements of the licenses

  • we need to publish any derived content only in ways that retain those freedoms

  • we need to make the source code available and document how artefacts are built

  • we need to record who the initial author was and ensure the work is properly licensed

  • we need to give proper credit to all significant contributors

  • we need to respect moral rights

The Website is considered a collection of works under free licenses and thus constitutes a derived work. The dual-license was chosen to provide additional leeway: the GPL part allows to incorporate the Asciidoc sources for the documentation directly into the source tree, while the CC part allows to use graphics and text in derived works without the requirement to provide source code (proper attribution is sufficient).
